Wegovy Oral Pill for Weight Management
Don't Like Injections? The Wegovy Tablet Is Here
The UK’s first GLP-1 weight-loss tablet (oral semaglutide) has now been approved, offering a needle-free alternative to weekly injections. The Wegovy oral pill represents an important new option for people who prefer a daily tablet over injections.
Here’s what it is, what the evidence shows, and how to be among the first to access them through clinician-led care at Envigore.

What You Should Know About Oral GLP-1 Treatments
- Prices are per month and cover your medication and clinical care. Your first month is at the introductory rate shown on the plan cards above.
- Your prescriber sets your dose — everyone starts at 1.5mg; your dose is reviewed and adjusted over time, and your price depends on your current prescribed dose.
- On a plan, your discounted price continues for the length of your plan. The once-off option has no plan and no exit fee — cancel whenever you like.
- Changed your mind on a plan? If you cancel before your plan ends, a cancellation fee applies: this equals the introductory discount you received — £40 (3-month), £50 (6-month) or £60 (12-month). It’s never more than you saved, and it’s waived if your prescriber advises you to stop treatment.
- Oral Wegovy is a prescription-only medicine. Treatment is subject to a clinical assessment and is provided only where a prescriber considers it suitable for you.

Switching your medication
Switching Between Your Weight Management Medications
Mounjaro injection, Wegovy injection and the Wegovy oral pill
These are prescription-only medicines, and any change between them must be approved by your Envigore prescriber. When you switch, complete the washout period set out below before you start your new medicine.
Switching From the Wegovy Injection Pen to the Wegovy Oral Pill
You do not need a washout period because the active ingredient is the same. You switch to the oral pill on the day your next injection would have been due. Your equivalent strength is set out below:
| Wegovy injection strength | Wegovy oral pill strength |
|---|---|
| 0.25mg | 1.5mg |
| 0.5mg | 4mg |
| 1mg | 9mg |
| 1.7mg | 25mg |
| 2.4mg | 25mg |
| 7.2mg | Remain on the injection. The 25mg pill is not a sufficient strength for this dose. |
If you had severe side effects when increasing your Wegovy dose, we may recommend starting on the oral pill strength one level below the equivalent shown above, where a lower strength is available.
Switching From the Mounjaro Injection Pen to Wegovy (Injection Pen or Oral Pill)
Complete a washout period after your last Mounjaro injection:
| Your current Mounjaro dose (strength) | Washout period |
|---|---|
| 2.5mg, 5mg or 7.5mg | 7 days after your last injection |
| 10mg, 12.5mg or 15mg | 14 days after your last injection |
You then start on the lowest strength:
- Wegovy injection pen: starts at 0.25mg
- Wegovy oral pill: starts at 1.5mg
Switching from the Wegovy injection pen to the Mounjaro injection pen
Complete a washout period after your last Wegovy injection:
| Your current Wegovy dose (strength) | Washout period |
|---|---|
| 0.25mg, 0.5mg or 1mg | 7 days after your last injection |
| 1.7mg, 2.4mg or 7.2mg | 14 days after your last injection |
You then start on the lowest strength:
- Mounjaro injection pen: starts at 2.5mg

Where things stand
Is an oral GLP-1 available in the UK yet?
The Wegovy pill (oral semaglutide) was approved by the MHRA on 11 June 2026 — the UK’s first GLP-1 tablet for weight management.4 UK supply is expected later in 2026, so it isn’t something that can be dispensed today. Orforglipron, a second oral GLP-1, is anticipated to follow. NHS availability of any new treatment is a separate decision that would follow guidance from NICE.

How Much Weight Could You Lose?
Clinical trials of the Wegovy oral pill and other oral GLP-1 medicines have reported meaningful weight loss when used alongside diet, exercise and ongoing lifestyle support.
Individual results vary depending on treatment and starting weight. The figures below come from separate studies, so they should not be viewed as a direct comparison.
Trial results are averages from separate controlled studies. Individual results vary, the two medicines were studied in different trials and populations, and the figures cannot be directly compared.

Oral Semaglutide (Wegovy weight loss pill) — OASIS-4
Adults living with overweight or obesity who received oral semaglutide 25 mg lost around 14% of their body weight over 64 weeks, regardless of whether they continued treatment for the remainder of the study. Among those who adhered to treatment throughout the trial, average weight loss increased to approximately 16.6%, compared with around 2% on placebo.¹
Orforglipron — Phase 3
In a separate 72-week study involving adults without diabetes, orforglipron at its highest dose produced an average weight loss of around 11%, compared with about 2% on placebo.² It has also been studied in type 2 diabetes, where it lowered blood sugar and supported weight loss.⁵
Trial figures come from separate studies and cannot be compared head-to-head. Eligibility and suitability for any treatment are always decided by a clinician.
Safety
Wegovy Pill Side Effects
Like all GLP-1 medicines, the Wegovy pill can cause side effects. Most are mild and improve over time
Common side effects (usually mild to moderate)
These mostly affect digestion, and tend to ease as your body adjusts — especially as your dose increases gradually:
- Nausea
- Diarrhoea
- Constipation
- Vomiting
- Indigestion
Less common but important risks
Your clinician will talk you through these during your consultation:
- Pancreatitis
- Gallbladder problems
- Dehydration (especially if vomiting or diarrhoea is significant)
- Allergic reactions (get urgent medical help if you notice swelling of the face or throat, a rash, or difficulty breathing)
This page is general information, not medical advice, and is not an advertisement for any prescription-only medicine. Any side effect can be reported to the MHRA Yellow Card scheme. Always speak with a clinician before starting or changing treatment.

GLP-1 medicines are not suitable for everyone, including during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or for those with certain medical conditions.
This is why a full review of your health history, including any other medications you’re taking, is such an important part of your consultation. Your prescriber will recommend the Wegovy pill only if it’s considered a safe and appropriate choice for you, and if ongoing monitoring is part of your care throughout treatment. Your prescription comes with a patient information leaflet covering all side effects, warnings and interactions in full.Side by side
Wegovy Pill vs Injectable Wegovy
Both the tablet and the injectable Wegovy pen contain semaglutide, so they work in your body very similarly. The main difference is simply how the medicine is taken.
| Wegovy pill | Wegovy injection | |
|---|---|---|
| How it’s taken | Once-daily tablet | Once-weekly injection |
| Needles needed? | No | Yes |
| Food timing | Empty stomach, wait 30 minutes | No food restrictions |
| Storage | Room temperature | Requires refrigeration |
| Best suited to | People who prefer tablets or dislike needles | People who prefer a weekly routine over a daily routine |
| Clinician decides suitability | Yes | Yes |
| Wegovy pill (oral semaglutide) | Foundayo (orforglipron) | |
|---|---|---|
| Drug type | Peptide GLP-1 — the same molecule as the Wegovy injection | Small-molecule (non-peptide) GLP-1 |
| How it’s taken | Once daily on an empty stomach with up to 120 ml of water, then wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking or other medicines | Once daily, any time of day, with or without food or water |
| UK status (June 2026) | MHRA-approved on 11 June 2026; UK supply expected later in 2026 | Not yet MHRA-approved; UK availability anticipated later in 2026 (approved in the US) |
| Trial weight loss | ~14% regardless of adherence, up to 16.6% if adhered to, at 64 weeks vs ~2% placebo | ~11% at 72 weeks at the highest dose vs ~2% placebo |
| Eligibility | BMI 30+, or 27–30 with a weight-related condition | Adults with obesity, or excess weight with weight-related medical problems |
While clinical trials have shown meaningful weight loss with both treatments, they were studied in separate trials and cannot be directly compared. A healthcare professional can help you weigh up the benefits of each and find the right dose and format for you.
The basics
How do Oral GLP-1s Work?
GLP-1 receptor agonists are medicines that mimic a natural gut hormone involved in appetite and digestion. By reducing appetite and helping you feel fuller after meals, GLP-1 medicine can help you lose weight alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.
Until now, they’ve mostly been weekly injections. Oral GLP-1s provide a similar treatment approach as a once-daily tablet — the same clinical idea, without the needle.
Oral semaglutide uses SNAC technology, which helps the medication be absorbed through the stomach so it can be absorbed effectively — something that was previously only possible through injection. This innovation allows semaglutide to be taken as a daily tablet rather than an injection.
Keeping it off
Making Your Weight Loss Results Last
Oral medication is just one part of long-term weight management. The lifestyle changes, sustainable habits and ongoing support around the treatment are what make results stick. Envigore’s Stride and Momentum maintenance programmes, dietitian and nutrition support, and regular reviews are built around keeping weight off once you’ve lost it.

Frequently Asked Questions About Wegovy Pills UK
The Wegovy oral pill contains semaglutide and is supplied in several strengths, increasing gradually to a 25 mg maintenance dose. It contains the same active ingredient as the Wegovy injection, which mimics a natural gut hormone (GLP-1) that helps you:
Feel fuller for longer
Lower food cravings
It’s taken alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. It’s the first GLP-1 weight-loss treatment available as a daily pill—until now, semaglutide was only available as an injection.
Yes, the MHRA approved semaglutide tablets (the Wegovy pill) on 11 June 2026 for adults with obesity (BMI 30+), or overweight (BMI 27–30) with at least one weight-related health condition. The UK was the first country in Europe to approve it. Approval was based on the OASIS 4 phase 3 trial.
It’s licensed for adults with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30+ or 27–30 with a weight-related condition. But eligibility on paper isn’t the same as it being right for you — that’s always a clinical decision made with you after a consultation.
Not currently. NHS availability requires a separate NICE decision that hasn’t been made. Based on how long the injectable form of Wegovy took to reach routine NHS availability after MHRA approval, access is unlikely before 2027–2028. For now, it’s a private prescription only.
No. Wegovy pills are not available over the counter and can only be obtained with a prescription from a qualified healthcare professional following a clinical assessment.
To help ensure the Wegovy pill is absorbed effectively, it’s important to take the tablet exactly as directed. It uses a special absorption mechanism that requires an undisturbed, fasted window to work. If that window is broken — by food, by drink, or by too much water — the medicine is not absorbed effectively, which may reduce its effectiveness.
Following these instructions helps maximise absorption and gives the medication the best chance to work as intended:
| Always | NEVER (including for 30 minutes after) |
|---|---|
| Take it on an empty stomach — fast for at least 8 hours first | Eat any food |
| Swallow it whole with a sip of plain water — 120 ml maximum | Drink coffee, tea, juice — or any more water |
| Take it at the same time each morning | Take other medicines or multivitamins |
| Wait the full 30 minutes before anything else passes your lips | Exceed 120 ml of water at any point |
Taking your medication as prescribed and following your clinician’s advice can help you get the most out of your treatment.
The dose is then built up gradually so your body can adjust and side effects stay manageable:
| Step (minimum 1 month at each) | Once-daily dose |
|---|---|
| Starting dose | 1.5 mg |
| Step 2 | 4 mg |
| Step 3 | 9 mg |
| Maintenance dose | 25 mg |
UK dosing schedule — your clinician guides each increase. 25 mg is the maintenance dose.
If you miss a dose, skip it and take the next tablet the following morning; do not take two in one day.
The three lower (titration) doses — 1.5 mg, 4 mg and 9 mg — are all the same small round tablet, 6.5 mm across, which most people find easy to swallow. The 25 mg maintenance dose is a larger oval tablet, 12 × 6 mm. Whatever the dose, the tablet is always swallowed whole — never crushed, split or chewed, as that would stop it working.
| Dose | Shape & size |
|---|---|
| 1.5 mg | Round, 6.5 mm |
| 4 mg | Round, 6.5 mm |
| 9 mg | Round, 6.5 mm |
| 25 mg (maintenance) | Oval, 12 × 6 mm |
Tablet shape and size by dose.
Each pack contains 30 tablets (three blister strips of 10) and doesn’t need to be kept in the fridge — part of what makes the tablet more convenient than the injection.
| Pack (30 tablets) | Height | Width | Depth |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.5 / 4 / 9 mg | 3.7 cm | 13.0 cm | 5.7 cm |
| 25 mg | 4.3 cm | 15.6 cm | 7.9 cm |

At standard doses, the pill is broadly comparable to the Wegovy injection (same active ingredient). Mounjaro has produced greater average weight loss in its own trials, but there is no head-to-head trial against the pill, so it can’t be read as a direct contest.
| Wegovy pill | Wegovy injection | Mounjaro | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Format | Daily tablet | Weekly injection | Weekly injection |
| Active ingredient | Semaglutide | Semaglutide | Tirzepatide |
| Trial weight loss | ~14%, up to 16.6% (64 wks) | ~17.5% at 2.4 mg (72 wks) | ~20%+ at higher doses7 |
| Needle-free? | Yes | No | No |
| Head-to-head vs the pill? | — | Same drug; broadly comparable | No head-to-head trial |
Figures come from separate trials and cannot be compared head-to-head. Suitability is always a clinical decision.
Yes. Semaglutide is the only weight-loss GLP-1 with a published two-way switching protocol, because the pill and injection share the same active ingredient.
There’s no exact milligram match, so lower doses are mapped to the closest tablet strength. Appetite control may feel less consistent for the first few weeks. Switch under clinical supervision, and you can switch back if it doesn’t suit you.
