Managing Weight During Menopause

Carrying extra weight is one of the most common concerns women experience during the menopause transition. Declining oestrogen levels affect how the body stores fat, shifting fat distribution towards the abdomen and increasing visceral fat around internal organs.

At the same time, changes in muscle mass mean the body burns fewer calories at rest, making weight changes during menopause harder to manage, even when nothing else in your routine has changed. Fluctuating hormones also affect appetite regulation, sleep quality, and energy, all of which influence metabolic health independently of diet.

The good news is that lifestyle changes have strong evidence behind them for managing weight during this stage. Our menopause coaching sessions cover the metabolic changes involved and help you identify the adjustments most likely to make a difference for you, including:

For those who want to explore treatment options alongside coaching, we also offer prescription weight loss treatments overseen by qualified UK prescribers, including Mounjaro and other GLP-1 weight loss treatments. We also have sessions with our registered dietitian for a more structured nutritional assessment.

You can read more about the relationship between menopause and weight management on the Envigore blog.

Quick Fact: Women can gain an average of 1.5kg per year during perimenopause without intervention. (BMS study)

Frequently Asked Questions

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) addresses the hormonal changes that drive many menopausal symptoms, including some of the metabolic shifts associated with menopausal weight gain. For some women, hormone therapy can help stabilise oestrogen levels, which may support weight management indirectly by improving sleep, reducing hot flushes, and easing mood swings.

However, HRT is not a weight loss treatment and is not suitable for everyone. Whether hormone replacement therapy is appropriate for you is a decision for your GP or a registered UK menopause specialist. Dr Jahn’s sessions can help you understand your options and prepare for that conversation.

Yes. Many women begin experiencing perimenopause symptoms years before a formal diagnosis, and cycles can be irregular for some time before periods stop altogether. You do not need a diagnosis to book a session. Our menopause specialist, Dr Jahn, can help you with the following:

  1. Understand whether what you are experiencing is consistent with perimenopause

  2. What to expect next after your coaching sessions

  3. How to have an informed discussion with your GP

Sessions are open to women at any stage, including those experiencing symptoms associated with premature ovarian insufficiency or early menopause.

NHS menopause services are valuable but often involve waiting times of several months. Booking an online appointment through Envigore means you can access personalised, unhurried guidance within days, without a GP referral. The benefit is not that private coaching replaces NHS care, but that it gives you expert support while you wait, or as a complement to the clinical pathway you are already on.

Many women find sessions with Dr Jahn to prepare for NHS or private consultations, arriving with clearer questions and a better understanding of their own situation.

Envigore’s coaching service is designed to complement, not compete with, the care you receive from your GP or NHS team. Dr Jahn’s sessions provide educational guidance and personalised lifestyle support, and she will always direct you to a registered UK clinician for anything within the scope of clinical treatment. Envigore also has a broader clinical team, including an HCPC-registered Physician Associate who oversees all prescribing and a registered dietitian, Veronica, who works with patients on nutrition.

Our clinical team and weight loss consultants can be involved where appropriate as part of a joined-up approach to your health.

No. Hormone replacement therapy is one of several approaches and is not suitable or preferable for everyone. The treatment options available range from hormone-based therapies to lifestyle modifications, cognitive behavioural approaches, and non-hormonal medications. NICE guidelines on menopause, diagnosis and management are a useful reference point for anyone who wants to read more before they speak to our clinicians.

After menopause, declining oestrogen is associated with changes in bone density and shifts in cardiovascular issues that carry real health risks if unaddressed. It also causes what many women call menopause belly. These are areas where lifestyle plays a meaningful supporting role, and both are covered within Envigore’s coaching sessions from an educational standpoint.

For clinical assessment of bone density or cardiovascular disease, your GP or a registered UK specialist is the right point of contact.

Anxiety, low confidence, emotional fatigue, and low mood are among the most commonly reported but least discussed aspects of this transition. Coaching sessions include dedicated time to address these areas, covering sleep strategies and the lifestyle factors associated with emotional resilience.

For women who feel that hypnotherapy may be a useful addition, Envigore also offers it as a separate service.
