Disclaimer: This content is for informational purposes only and should not be considered medical advice. Wegovy is a prescription-only treatment and requires a full medical assessment to determine suitability. Results may vary and treatment is provided only after consultation with a qualified healthcare professional. Always consult your GP or a licensed clinician before beginning any weight loss treatment.
What is Wegovy (Semaglutide)?
Wegovy is a prescription medicine containing semaglutide, a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity to support weight management in eligible adults.
Wegovy is authorised for adults with:
- A BMI of 30kg/m² or greater (obesity)
- A BMI of 27kg/m² to less than 30kg/m² (overweight) with at least one weight-related medical condition
Semaglutide mimics the action of GLP-1, a hormone involved in appetite regulation. It acts on brain areas involved in appetite, helping you feel fuller, reduce hunger and decrease food cravings. It also slows gastric emptying, which can contribute to feelings of fullness.
Wegovy is now available in the UK in both injectable and oral formulations. These are different formulations with different dosing and administration instructions. This page focuses primarily on injectable Wegovy.
The Wegovy injection for weight loss is suitable for adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or above, or 27 to 29.9 with a weight-related health condition. Envigore’s personalised programme includes Wegovy treatment alongside:
- Dietitian-led nutritional support
- Clinician oversight
- Ongoing care through every stage of your weight loss journey
Wegovy is available through Envigore as part of a personalised, clinician-led plan, with real support every step of the way.
How Does Wegovy Weight Loss Treatment Work?
Wegovy (semaglutide treatment) helps reset your relationship with food by acting on the brain and gut.
It can:
- Reduce appetite
- Increase feelings of fullness
- Reduce hunger and food cravings
- Slow gastric emptying
- Support reduced food intake
- Help with weight loss when combined with diet and physical activity
How Effective Are Wegovy Weight Loss Injections?
In the STEP 1 trial, adults treated with semaglutide 2.4 mg alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity lost an average of 14.9% of their body weight after 68 weeks, compared with 2.4% with placebo.[1]
Weight loss varies from person to person. In the same trial:
Almost 9 in 10 people (86.4%) lost at least 5% of their body weight
Around 7 in 10 people (69.1%) lost at least 10%
About half (50.5%) lost at least 15%
Roughly 1 in 3 people lost at least 20% of their body weight
These figures come from the trial’s main analysis, which included everyone who took part regardless of whether they completed the full course of treatment. It is a way of measuring results that reflects real-world use rather than only best-case outcomes.
These results should not be interpreted as a guarantee of individual weight loss. Your response will depend on factors including your starting weight, treatment adherence, dose, health and lifestyle.

Wegovy and Oral HRT or Birth Control
Wegovy® adds more flexibility for patients using oral hormone replacement therapy (HRT) or birth control when properly managed.
Oral Hormone Replacement Therapy
- No specific efficacy interaction has been established with oral HRT.
- Some primary care guidance recommends a clinical review, since weight-loss injections may reduce how well oral HRT protects the womb lining. This is a caution flag, not a contraindication.
- Non-oral formulations (patches, gels) are worth considering if GI side effects are significant.
Oral Contraceptives
What to know:
- FSRH guidance confirms semaglutide doesn't require additional contraception on efficacy grounds: a modest rise in levonorgestrel exposure wasn't clinically meaningful, and peak hormone concentrations were unaffected.
- This differs from tirzepatide, which does require a backup method for 4 weeks after starting and after each dose increase, as it's the only GLP-1 drug shown to meaningfully reduce oral contraceptive bioavailability.
Note: Wegovy’s GI side effects (nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea) can, in principle, disrupt absorption of any oral medication if severe. Patients experiencing these symptoms should flag it at review regardless of whether they’re on HRT or contraception.
FSRH also advises using contraception throughout GLP-1 treatment generally, given limited safety data on these drugs in pregnancy, independent of any efficacy concern. Always follow NHS, FSRH, or British Menopause Society guidance for individual patients.
What to know:
- Suitable for patients using oral HRT (estrogen or progestogen).
- Compatible with oral contraceptives. Current guidance from CoSRH and the NHS(Feb 2025) confirms that semaglutide does not require additional contraception.

Wegovy vs Mounjaro
Choosing the right weight loss treatment can feel overwhelming. At Envigore, we’re here to guide you every step of the way. Both Mounjaro and Wegovy are clinically proven to support weight loss, but they work slightly differently. Below is a simple side-by-side comparison to help you better understand the key differences.
The SURMOUNT-5 head-to-head trial (NEJM, 2024) compared tirzepatide and semaglutide directly. Results showed an average body weight reduction of 20.2% with tirzepatide versus 13.7% with semaglutide at 72 weeks, though both medications are approved and effective options. Individual response varies, and suitability depends on your medical history.

FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
Wegovy is a prescription-only weight loss medication containing semaglutide. It works by mimicking a natural hormone that helps regulate appetite, making you feel fuller for longer and reducing food cravings.
Yes. Wegovy is a prescription-only medicine in the UK. If you are considering Wegovy, you will need an assessment by a qualified healthcare professional to determine whether it is suitable for you. Eligible patients may be able to receive Wegovy through an NHS or private prescription service, depending on their circumstances.
You can access Wegovy through a regulated online healthcare service, but it cannot be legally supplied without a valid prescription. Our service requires a clinical assessment and uses a registered pharmacy to dispense prescription medicines.
In the STEP 1 trial [1], participants treated with semaglutide 2.4 mg lost an average of 14.9% of their body weight after 68 weeks. Individual results vary. We can help you set realistic weight loss goals and monitor your progress towards your target weight.
Yes. Oral Wegovy (semaglutide) is authorised in the UK for weight management in eligible adults. It is a daily tablet rather than the once-weekly semaglutide injection for weight loss.
Oral Wegovy and injectable Wegovy both contain semaglutide but are different formulations with different dosing instructions. They should not be considered interchangeable without your prescriber’s advice.
Your suitability for either formulation will depend on your individual health needs and clinical assessment.
Most patients begin to notice changes in appetite within the first few weeks. Significant weight loss is usually seen after 3 months, with ongoing progress over a year.
Wegovy has been extensively studied and is authorised by the MHRA for use in the UK. Like all prescription medications, it carries potential side effects, which your prescriber will discuss with you during your consultation.
No, Wegovy is not classified as habit-forming or addictive. It works by supporting your body’s natural processes rather than creating any form of physical dependency.
You may be eligible if you have a BMI of 30 or higher or 27+ with weight-related conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or high cholesterol.
Yes, Wegovy is safe for many people with type 2 diabetes but your prescriber will check your medical history carefully to ensure it’s right for you.
Wegovy received UK authorisation in July 2026 for the treatment of non-cirrhotic metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) in adults with moderate-to-advanced liver fibrosis, alongside diet and exercise.
This is a separate licensed indication from weight management. If you have liver disease, your clinician will determine whether this treatment is appropriate for you.
Yes, Wegovy is generally safe to use alongside oral or transdermal HRT. There are no known interactions but your prescriber will confirm suitability during your assessment.
Possibly. When you complete our consultation, you will have to share your medical history and our prescriber will review results and medication history to check for interactions and ensure safe treatment.
No. Wegovy is intended for people living with obesity or being overweight with health risks. It isn’t prescribed for cosmetic weight loss.
If you have previously used another weight loss medication, tell your prescriber during your consultation. They will consider your previous treatment, response, side effects and medical history when deciding whether Wegovy is appropriate.
Weight regain can occur after stopping Wegovy. Studies have found that people may regain a substantial proportion of the weight they lost after treatment is withdrawn. Our team can help you plan ongoing weight management and discuss whether you need to continue treatment.
Mild side effects are common and usually temporary. If they persist or worsen, speak to our care team. Always contact emergency services (999 in the UK) if symptoms are severe.
Yes, Wegovy is approved for long-term use when monitored by a prescriber or GP, as part of a plan that includes diet and activity changes.
Wegovy comes in a pre-filled injection pen, taken once a week into your stomach, thigh or upper arm.
If you miss a dose, you can take it within 5 days. If it’s been longer, skip the missed dose and take your next one as scheduled. Never take a double dose.
Yes, Wegovy is self-administered but we provide full guidance, video instructions and ongoing support to make you confident.
Keep the Wegovy weight loss pen in the fridge between 2°C and 8°C before use. Once in use, it can be stored at room temperature (below 30°C) for up to 6 weeks.
Treatment is usually long-term, but your prescriber will review your progress regularly and help decide the best plan for you.
Yes, some patients transition from Mounjaro (tirzepatide) to Wegovy (semaglutide) and our nurses and prescribers will support you for a safe and easy switch. See our guide on switching between Wegovy and Mounjaro for more information.
Patients may switch if Wegovy is more suitable for their health, availability or cost or if they’ve experienced side effects on Mounjaro.
If you’re switching from Mounjaro to Wegovy, our team will determine the appropriate timing and starting dose based on your previous treatment, dose, response and individual circumstances. Do not take Mounjaro and Wegovy together unless your prescriber specifically instructs you to.
Both medications are highly effective for weight loss, though results can vary. Wegovy typically supports up to 18% weight reduction, while Mounjaro has shown slightly higher averages in trials.
If you are a new patient, you’ll first need to complete your consultation, share your medical history and provide details of your last prescription, including dose and date. This helps our clinical team confirm a safe transition. You’ll then have a video consultation where we’ll walk you through the switch and answer any questions.
If you are an existing patient, you can request to switch when reordering your medication. You’ll begin on the lowest Wegovy dose (0.25mg). Our nurse or prescriber may call you to explain the process, discuss any changes and guide you through the new treatment plan.
For extra support at any stage, get in touch. Our team is available to address your individual needs.
